Drug Uses

Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent to your brain. Soma drugs / carisoprodol may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

How Taken

Soma is taken orally. The usual adult dosage of soma is one 350 mg tablet, three times daily and at bedtime. Usage in patients under age 12 is not recommended. It is recommended that you take Soma with food, or with milk, to minimize the likelihood that you will suffer an upset stomach as a result of taking the medication.

Warnings/Precautions

If you have porphyria or is pregnant, Soma is not the right oral medication for you. People with kidney or liver disease will be given lower dosage of Soma, although medication does not have to be completely avoided. However, people with such diseases need to undergo special tests to make sure that Soma is safe for them to use. There is no known study that shows whether Soma can negatively affect nursing babies, so if you are a nursing mother, don’t take Soma without consulting with your doctor first. Soma is also not recommendable for children aged 16 and below or elderly aged 65 and above. The most important thing to remember, however, when taking the drug is to follow exact instructions given by the doctor.

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of soma / carisoprodol. Keep your doses at least 4 hours apart from one another.

Possible Side Effects

Soma may cause dizziness, vertigo, ataxia, tremor, agitation, irritability, headache, depressive reactions, syncope, and insomnia. Allergic or idiosyncratic reactions occasionally develop. They are usually seen within the period of the first to fourth dose in patients having had no previous contact with the drug. Skin rash, erythema multiforme, pruritus, eosinophilia, and fixed drug eruption with cross reaction to meprobamate have been reported with Soma. Severe reactions have been manifested by asthmatic episodes, fever, weakness, dizziness, angioneurotic edema, smarting eyes, hypotension, and anaphylactoid shock. These effects do not necessarily point to an overdose, but if any of these are detected, that mean’s something’s wrong. Inform your doctor of any negative effects felt as soon as possible.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature 15°-30°C (59°-86°F). Dispense in a tight container.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of a Soma overdose include low blood pressure (weakness, fainting, confusion), decreased breathing, and unconsciousness. If overdose occurs, you should seek urgent medical attention. If overdose is detected within an hour after ingestion, there would be less damage. Overdose symptoms include fainting, dizziness, unconsciousness, respiratory difficulty, seizures, and paralysis.

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Soma may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Soma.
